James Webb Telescope Directly Measures Supermassive Black Hole in Early Universe

Astronomers have used the James Webb Space Telescope to perform the first direct mass measurement of a supermassive black hole from the early universe.

Using the James Webb Space Telescope, an international team of astronomers has successfully conducted the first direct mass measurement of a supermassive black hole dating back to the early universe. The object, named Abell2744-QSO1, existed just 700 million years after the Big Bang.

This breakthrough provides critical insights into the nature of the enigmatic 'little red dots' discovered early in the telescope's mission. The findings confirm previous theoretical mass estimates and help scientists better understand how supermassive black holes formed so rapidly in cosmic history.
